Let’s Talk EDC

What are a few things you always have with you? If you’re a man, chances are that at bare minimum, you’re traveling with your wallet and a set of keys. If you’re a woman, you might have a handful of things all corralled into your purse. The things you carry with you are often considered the absolute necessities, but what about the things that you might need? How do you choose what to carry?

Of course this is a personal choice. While some insist that a pocket knife is the only EDC they need, others will say that they’d never leave home without a kydex gun holster and their firearm of choice. We have discussed everyday carry items a handful of times here on our blog, but in today’s post we’d like to take a look at the art of EDC and balancing your desire to carry things you might need sometimes with not having a whole bunch of stuff to cart around with you wherever you go.

A Few Things to Think About

At its core, the idea for stuff that you’re going to carry with you every day is associated with preparedness. What is it exactly that you’re preparing for? Well, that is, of course, going to vary from person to person.

If you do a lot of writing for your job, you may want to consider carrying a heavy duty notebook and a high quality pen to take notes in. If you work on a job site and you find yourself getting dirty regularly, having a handkerchief tucked into your back pocket can be a huge lifesaver. If you love to crack open a cold one when you walk in the door after a day of hard work, a bottle opener on your keychain is a must.

“Okay, So What Should I Carry?”

We’ve written about three everyday carry essentials that we believe every person should carry in a previous blog, but to sum that up, we think that a pocket knife, a small notebook, and a cellphone are really great places to start. The trick to figuring out exactly what you need to carry is to take a look at the day to day routines in your life and think about what might be useful. For some people it might mean a few items they can toss in their pockets on the way out the door. Others might find that they need a well-organized backpack with a number of different compartments to suit their needs perfectly.

Of course you’ll also want to balance what you’re carrying with how well you can carry it. For example, you might need a flashlight. If that’s the case, a huge spotlight will probably be out of the question, but a maglite you can slip into a pocket gives you the best of both worlds.

As with all things in life, the key to getting it exactly right is simply experimenting. You’ll figure out what works and what doesn’t pretty quickly, allowing you to change things up. You will also likely find out that your needs will change over time as well. Whereas you were once getting a lot of use out of one item, you’ll find that you don’t need it as often. This makes it a great candidate for an item to store in your vehicle, but you’ll also want to balance what you’re carrying in your vehicle with the amount of room you have there too.

What Are You Going to Carry?

In short, doing your research is the key to making sure you have what you need and that you’re not being bogged down with the items that you need to have on you. Shirts and jackets with pockets as well as good blue jeans or duck canvas pants are the friends of EDC enthusiasts, allowing them to carry more items in an efficient manner. Consider for just a moment the difference between a pair of jeans and a t shirt and then wearing that same outfit but tossing a trucker jacket on over the top of it. In many instances, you just added four more pockets to your outfit.

No matter what you decide to carry or how you decide to carry it, the goal is to be prepared. What better way to make sure you’re ready for anything than with one of our trusty kydex holsters?
